I rediscovered an artist named Marilyn Minter.  I really like her art work and I also enjoy her as an artist.  I can really relate to her views on perfection in regards to females.  She seems to get some backlash since she has many assistants work on her pieces.  I find this a little odd but after watching many of her interviews I've come to the conclusion that YES they do work on her art BUT she does take the photos and she does have some other part in the making of her paintings.

In this video Marilyn is walking around her studio with the interviewer to show her art work and also you can see some of the assistants working on the art.  Marilyn creates large scale paintings based off photos.  She calls herself a "finisher" so she does in fact work on her art...just not the same way as most artists do.  I mean if Andy Warhol can (and did) do this then why not her?  The woman is pushing 70 so what is the big deal?  The work is amazing and that's all that should matter, right?

New art ideas & techniques

Hello fellow Blog readers.  I am working on some new ideas with my artwork.  I am using more water and less paint...and I am really liking the results.  I am going to continue in this direction for a while...I just love experimenting!!

Nychos: Cheesebrain/Vienna 2012

Recently Nychos was in Detroit, and darn it since I missed his show at Inner State!  BUT I did get to go downtown to see the murals he worked on while he was here.  I may post pics of those...I'm lazy I must admit...but they're on my Facebook so not too lazy ;)

So above is a clip of him working on one of his paintings.  I think you will be truly amazed.  I definitely was...didn't think all this could be done with spraypaint.  So beautiful and yes, just amazing!  More info about Nychos HERE

Barbie Redux by Patricia Anders

As many of you know, I love altering Barbie Dolls. But wow, I haven't seen anyone alter them the way artist Patricia Anders can! They are amazing to say the least. And very inspiring when looking at new ways to alter my own dolls. Patricia also creates some really beautiful paintings. Art-o-Mat at Detroit Comics

Today I was out and about (early for a change too!) so I decided to take a little drive to Ferndale. It's a very cool little city near Royal Oak (you all know I go there often). So I mainly went to Ferndale to check out the Art-o-Mat machine at Detroit Comics. I've only heard of it recently from Took, who was the winner of my last giveaway. But ever since I heard of it from her, I've REALLY wanted to go and today was a perfect day (up early, no work, and nice out).

So what is an Art-o-Mat you might be wondering? Well, the Art-o-Mat dispenses original art works by artists from all over the USA. The Art-o-Mat itself is a retired cigarette vending machine. So basically what you do is....

...look at the different artists & a sample of their art (or description) above each knob.

Then you make your decision, pull the knob...and a second later, your art will come out. (Kerplunk-the noise when it drops down) Yay! Cool, right?

And here's some info (much I've already said) on the Art-o-Mat. So you might be wondering which ones did I choose? I originally thought I'd get TWO art pieces but after seeing ALL the art (and not knowing when I'd come back again), I decided to get THREE. I will show them below.


I chose this one and got...

...this beautiful image on wood. I love trees so I was very happy to get this one by artist Jessica Guptill.

The next one I chose was by an artist named Herbert Hoover. No picture of his art but the description was "hand cast pewter objects." I thought that was pretty interesting so I got...

...a cracker! Oooo, I wonder what it would look like!

And it looks like...a cracker! But a shiny silver cracker. ;) Very cool!

And lastly I said What The Heck and got one more cuz my eye kept going back to this image by artist Julie Armbruster. So if my eye is going back to look it means GET NOW EVE! LOL.

So I saw this cute little white whale...and thought HM, love it and I'm sure her art is cool.


And what do you know, I got the whale on wood! Yay! Mission accomplished. Thanks so much Took for telling me about the Art-o-Mat, I'm sure I will visit it soon again. Actually, Roxy emailed me before posting her suggestion on here. She told me why she chose the shrine (in a box) idea there first so I would understand what she meant by this kind of shrine in her comment.

Now have any of you seen the film White Oleander? If you haven't, you should. It's a very powerful film with such great performances by every actor...right down to the tiny parts.

White Oleander is a very artist-driven film. And those types of films really appeal to me.

So the main character, Astrid, makes shrines in suitcases. Why exactly, I won't reveal...if you haven't seen it yet. But it is very clever. And I knew exactly what Roxy meant by saying I should do a shrine in a box...and that maybe it should be about Alice (in Wonderland).

I even went back and watched the film because I honestly forgot how much I loved it. Again, it's a very powerful film (and book, which I also read)...and quite sad but it's still really really good. And I recommend it to anyone artistic or anyone simply wanting to watch a group of really good actors with a very intense story.

Post Apocalyptic Motor City show @ 323

I went to an art show over the weekend at 323 Gallery in Royal Oak. I didn't take any pictures because it was really packed...and I just wasn't in the mood to take 'em honestly. So what you see is pics I've borrowed from 323's FaceBook page of the show-Post Apocalyptic Motor City. As I was browsing the pics last night, I saw that my friend April and I were in several-very cool! And I posted a couple below...you can see us alright...I didn't even see 'em take the pics. Because if I did, I'm sure I would've tried dodging 'em. :) Ok, on with the show...

The picture above is the outside of the gallery. Yes, it normally is that color but the party store signs and such they added for this particular show.


And this picture shows basically the whole gallery...and me too...(I'm on the left, in black pointing...with crazy headband-I know!...and it's kinda funny there's another lady in the distance pointing too...looks interesting & cool) and April, who is right next to me...not facing the camera. Don't I look like I know what I'm talking about...critiquing the art & all?, ha ha....

Hm, maybe it's time to get a bit DARK & creepy!!!

Last year's flier/card for DAMNED

I just picked up a flier today about a local art show happening soon called DAMNED II. It took place last year (on Devil's Night, they call it in Detroit...the night before Halloween) and this marks its second year. Anyways you can submit your art (for FREE) and there's really nothing to lose by showing your stuff. So as the back of the flier says: "Artists of all mediums are welcome to submit their work for review. There are no restrictions on genre or content but the more beautifully disturbing or powerfully instrospective, the better."

And I've made some DARKer stuff in the past (another reason for me to get the rest of my old art pieces out of storage at the parents' house). One piece comes to mind in particular...and I'm glad I didn't sell it at the art show I had (back in the day). I actually found a picture of it recently (used to be good at taking pics of my art) and said "OH, I made that!" It may seem a lil' dark to people but I love this piece.

I don't have a scanner so let me try describing it a bit (btw: don't know the name of this piece)....it's a grey/black/silver metallic painting with a silver metallic (painted) plastic doll's body (from the waist up) glued in a spot of dark red paint...aka: blood, at the bottom of the painting. I glued wire (w/stars on it that you buy at Xmas or other holidays) from the top of the painting to the pool of "blood." I honestly don't know what I was trying to say with this piece but when I look back on my old art, that one stands out to me for some reason. Was really happy with the end result...and many of my old paintings (10 years back or so), I don't really like much now.

BUT, I'm not going to use THAT painting/mixed media piece if I were to show my stuff for possible display @ DAMNED. Hm....I don't know what I'd make. Maybe a painting...maybe something with mirrors....I'll have to think about it. BUT I got 2 months to get my stuff in so I want to try making atleast 3-4 pieces.

Sticky & Sweet Art Show @ 323 East Gallery

Several weeks back I went to an art show at 323 East Gallery in Royal Oak.
It was called the STICKY & SWEET show featuring works by Audrey Pongracz and Kill Taupe. I enjoy both artists work but honestly really really enjoy Audrey's work quite a lot. And was hoping to get to chat with her for a second. And yay, luckily I was able to. Mainly because I got there pretty early...for once, believe it or not!

She was SUPER cool and she let me take pics of her pieces on the walls and some of her, as you will see below. Recently, she was named BEST LOCAL ARTIST by local Detroit magazine, REAL DETROIT, which is a BIG DEAL if you ask me.

We chatted about many things and found out we had many similar interests in the art/artists we like-yay Ryden & Tara McPherson! As well as our BIG love for music and...skeleton keys! Yes, skeletons keys rule. She even had one around her neck on a necklace that I thought was pretty sweet! (She even told me a good place to find 'em-how cool!)

Had a really great time, despite the HUMIDITY-was terrible that day...and 323 didn't have any air. So that's why you won't see any pics of me...was sweating like a PIG. Ugh, gross...but anyways...if you'd like to check out Audrey's work, please click here. And for her BLOG, please click here.
