A very sweet gift from Sullivan

Hi friends & followers. Recently I received a very sweet gift in the mail from Sullivan McPig & his owner. It really made my day!



First I opened the very BIG envelope...



...and it was the coolest card of Hello Kitty. Have never seen one quite like that. And as many of you know, I love everything HK!...



...and then I saw that there was more Kitty-stuff inside, lots of candy, yum...and some cool buttons. Thanks so much Sullivan & Carien, it made me smile. ^_^

Sugar & Spice mixed media piece

Hiya. How was your weekend? Mine was good...short, but good. ;)

Well, I've been working on this piece above for several days and it is officially done now. I wanted to work with these doll faces I received as a nice (awesome!) gift from my artist friend Lynn. She was so thoughtful to grab a bunch of different doll, animal, etc...faces for me at a cool little place in Missouri. Thanks Lynn, you rule!



So these faces were actually really hard to apply to this canvas panel. I tried not using any glue or anything (besides paint) to hold 'em in place...a new thing I've been trying to see if stuff sticks. Sometimes it does, sometimes it don't. Trial & error basically. They are very thin & delicate faces (very old I would also guess!) so yeah, they didn't stay in place.

So I had to use the glue gun, which was fine...I just didn't want to end up using a ton & "ruin" the look of the faces. I like the way it turned out in the end.

On this 11 x 14 canvas panel (which I also framed) I used: plastic doll faces, acrylic paint (lots as you can see from the texture), glitter, hot glue, and....



...THUMBTACKS. I don't know why but I just have this thing for 'em. I like the way they look dried. Also, when I (literally) pile 'em on to the piece, they will end up turning point up because of all the paint holding 'em down...which I think is sweeeeeet!

Basically this piece is about the old saying "Little girls are made of sugar and spice and everything nice." And yeah, I added a pinch of real sugar & spice to the piece when it was almost dried. Just because. ;)

Broken Heart (for Ryan) + Update: Finished Product!

Hi again. The picture above as well as the two pics below are the 'finished product.' Completely dried, two coats of paint. I like how it turned out. Exactly what I wanted...and worth the pain of a piece of glass getting into my pinky finger-ouch! ;)

Some of my Facebook (Bloggy) friends have seen the process of this art piece called Broken Heart. Well, here it is, almost finished...probably going to do one more coat of paint (it's currently drying).

• This piece was inspired by the song "Dead Hearts" by Dead Man's Bones because there's smashing of...something (glass, ceramic, somethings that are making a big SMASH). So this piece is comprised of: a wood heart, pieces of a ceramic bowl and glass cup (broken of course)...and what kinda glue? Industrial strength e6000 or something like that. Never used it before BUT it has a deadly smell...seems like I'm the only one who can STILL smell it when I walk in the house.




• Mike nor Tom said they can smell anything...so I hope I didn't inhale too much fumes (uh ohhh!)...cuz I did use a lot since I did not know what I was doing (which is very common!). OK, enjoy your day & I'm off to work soon. Don't forget to read about my NEW giveaway below BTW. Take care~

My Gift to Mike's Grandmother, Lenore

This was my 1st time making a wreath. Wreath was from Michaels, as was the circles w/the sticker letters on 'em and also both the ribbons. Flowers from...Dollar Tree, wooohooo! ;) I am giving this to the family today, I hope they like it! (People may not know at first but I picked a wreath because of them being branches. Mike's grandma loved trees and had a small display of 'em up year round on her entertainment center (none real, just cute lil' trees...all different kinds). So somehow I wanted to add the "tree" part...and I know wreaths are put on graves and such but that's not really what I was thinking...though it does make some sense. :)

Shirt, Tin, and a few gifts from friends

Here's an Emily the Strange shirt I got when Hot Topic had a half off their half off clearance sale a while back. Yes, I haven't even worn it yet...I have one too many shirts...but when they're that cheap (5-6 dollars), it's hard to resist.

A Skelanimal small tin box from Target. Only 1.99! My fave Skelanimal there is the owl, Oliver. Now on to some gifts I've received from some friends lately...

First a really nice cross-stitched bag w/Hello Kitty on it made by Carien (Sullivan's owner). She knows I love Hello Kitty! And I love this bag lots. She also sent me the two pins on the bag. Thanks so much Carien!

Next is a box (a small mint box) of LOTS of buttons from my friend at the library, Karen. She hand-picked them...I like the colors lots. Thank you Karen!

And last but not least is my long-awaited surprise gift from Erin (Queen of Clearance). Drumroll........

An awesome plate of Alice (and all the characters) from Wonderland. How thoughtful and sweet of her! Thank you so much Erin, I love it! It's exactly my style! ;)

A Swap with Sullivan, yay!!!

Recently I did a swap with the owner of Sullivan, from The Life & Travels of Sullivan McPig blog, and it was so much fun! I love getting new & interesting things-especially from faraway lands. Ha ha...well, you know what I mean because it came alllll the wayyyyy over to Detroit from The Netherlands! And that's pretty far to me. :}

So this is what I saw when I opened up my box. Yay and a few wrapped gifts-did I ever say how much I LOVE surprises?!!? I saved those for last. Here's what surprises were in my box....OH, and the only thing I knew for sure I was getting was some buttons because Sullivan's owner's OH (other half) designed one. If you click on the pictures to enlarge 'em, he did the one that's green with a white goat design, very cool! I love everything inside. OK, finally, here's the stuff I received below...

Just LOOK at all this cool stuff! Everything from yummy black licorice (so so good, not like the typical licorice around here for sure!) to cool children illustrated cards to a CD by a Dutch band called Within Temptation, which reminds me, I have to put 'em into Mike's I-tunes. Doh!!!

Of course I loved everything she sent but these are some of my very faves. They include: a small stitched bag (that had the pins in 'em and that Carien made too-which is even better!), Cute As Hell notebook, the licorice, Hello Kitty candy spray-woo for HK, a small black figurine, and the pig game with cute lil' rubber-y pigs, awwww. I don't understand what to do in the game though (I think it was mentioned in one of Sullivan's blog posts)...since the directions aren't in English. Thanks so much Carien for the lovely gifts!

OK, now it's done! The Birthday Girl, that is...

The Birthday Girl (my art piece) is finally finished, hooray!!!

But first some background on my art process lately and my process in the past as well...

I've noticed something with how I make art for the past several weeks. Well, that is art for my (soon-to-be) Etsy shop (and Sorry, Diane I don't know when I'll open shop-I don't have a set date at the moment-But have no fear, I will be shouting from the mountain tops when I do OPEN it!). Ok, I feel that if people are going to purchase something from me I want it to be as good as I can possibly make it. I know that sounds like a simple statement but it's not. Atleast for me it's complicated. (But I think it makes YOU...well for ME, think more.)

What I mean is some of the things I've posted about my updates were things (for example the hand mirror & the other hand mirror with no mirror-Pill Face it was called)...that literally sat around in my ArtSpace for a while (and I considered them 'finished'). Pill Face I made wayyyy back...then I changed it...simply because I thought it needed that extra something. That extra something was just metallic paint. Same kinda thing with the other hand mirror-I completed it, thought it looked good, and then ___ time goes by and I say "Hm, I'm gonna make it better!" And I think it did come out better in the end.

As I've heard from many people (and yes Diane, thanks for reminding me too!), LESS is sometimes more when it comes to art. But in some cases, I just feel like a piece is missing....something. The piece below called "The Birthday Girl" was never a themed piece. Then the more I worked on it, the more it became something of its own. And I do really enjoy 'themed' art...but usually don't do it because it takes a lot of thought. When I started to paint (semi-seriously) back in 1999, I was making paintings/mixed media like it was going out of style...and this continued on & off for years. Usually I'd take a BIG break, then start whippin' 'em out again.

But then I look back at those pieces (which I took pictures of some), and say "Hm, I could've done so much more with it!" But maybe it was just my thing then. Because it never took me long to complete a piece...a day or two at the most. And they all kinda looked the same. I had ONE BIG theme back then-faces...but very very abstract faces. My first & only art show was even title "Faces in Disguise"-yay, I came up with the name too (it was a group show with a few friends)! {I'm actually going to be getting ALL the art I have at my parents house very soon-which is A LOT...so it'll be interesting to see things I've completely forgotten about. And to see how my 'style' has changed/evolved. I will more than likely post pics of some of those pieces...but of course!}

OK, so with the pieces I'm working on for ETSY, I'm trying my hardest to make them the best that they can be. And I'm trying to make them (kinda thinking, especially with Birthday Girl) that someone will see it and want to get it as a gift for a family member, friend, etc.... So I have to say THIS (below) is the first piece that I feel is READY for ETSY. And I think it is more like a piece you'd see and say "Oh, maybe ___ would like that for her birthday." (Or whatever else...but I'm thinking birthday...but an unbirthday will work too!)

Sooo, the piece below is Birthday Girl before I added that one little extra something-to finish it. I thought it looked good...but a sticker in the top left corner was not sticking well, and hm, by 5pm, the darn thing fell off. So I was thinking it needs "Something." So here it is pre-5 ish...

And this picture (sorry, it's wayyyy below) is post-5 pm. I just thought it needed that extra SOMETHING, ya know!?? Do you know what it is? But of course YOU do! And now I feel completely satisfied with it. And I don't plan on touching it again. I was telling Mike earlier when he was at work today "Hm, I think I need to add more to it." And he's funny because he just said "Be careful." Which is true. I mean if it looks pretty good, why mess with it!?? But hey, I'm a pro (well, not really but I can pretend, right!??)...and I would've figured out something else, even if it took some time. And time is OK sometimes. :}

So I hope you can understand what I'm trying to get at with this POST (especially you artistic ones!). And that is I just think art should take some time, thought, and a lil' blood, sweat, or tears involved in it too. AND don't forget about PAIN (did I mention I have some "thing" in my foot? I think it's a teeny tiny piece of a mirror...cuz I didn't clean up all the mirror-dust when I broke a couple mirrors-a while back-in the basement aka: my art area. It feels a bit better now but it REALLY hurt a few days back.). But no pain, no gain, right!?! My ArtSpace/Area is a deadly place to go...you MUST always wear shoes for one! ^_^

And I guess I'm feeling a lil' bit of pressure knowing someone might buy my art so that is kinda good...kinda is bad, ya know? And then the attachment to the piece also...but that's a whole other story (and YOU artists know exactly what I mean with getting attached to something), that I won't get into. Alright...Birthday Girl w/that special something is pictured below...

And my finishing touch (which I hope I can put on all of my pieces but I'll see how it goes), is the "Handmade By" stamper...which I would've got the "Hand-altered By" if they had it. ;} And the key stamp cuz I just love keys....especially old keys like that one to the right. And that sticker that fell off the frame actually came into use on the back of the piece, The Best Birthday Ever sticker. I may have to tape it if it doesn't stick, which is fine. I definitely didn't want to tape it to the front of the frame-mainly cuz none of the other stickers needed tape to stay. And that wouldn't have looked right. I think the flower was much more fitting. And yes DIANE, I will name drop you one last time, you are SO right-there are NO accidents in art. OK, do I get something for name dropping YOU the most in one post!???! ^_^

Darn. And can you believe I did not plan to do this gigantic of a post! Well I never actually plan to write long or short, I just write. 9 times out of 10 I don't have things pre-written...which I'm assuming most blog authors don't do either...guess it depends. I REALLY came on to write on my personal (secret) blog...and here I go on about this piece & ART in general. Don't worry though I won't be doing this for EVERY piece I make! Yikes, that would be a bit mad! So would any of you artists like to explain your process and views about selling art (if you have or haven't yet)?

At my art show (back in the day aka: a billion years ago), I did sell a mixed media painting & I have to say that it was ONE of the greatest feelings I've ever had. It was pretty cool. So again, whatever you'd like to say about your art & experiences, please dish! You know me, I'm always curious. ;}

OK, it's almost midnight...OK, now it's past 12 AM since Mike interrupted me. So I should head off. Gotta work tomorrow, blahhh. But it MUST be done...that is until I am a rich & famous artist living in the country side of France, and don't need to have my job anymore. Oooo la la, what an amazing life that would be!

Happy Friday, what a long week!

It was a very long week for me and I don't know why since Monday was a holiday. I think it was because it has been soooooooo slow at work the past few days I was there. Still feels like we're on break though it's the beginning of the Summer Semester. I mean I have no idea what to do at a certain point...I get computer-ed out, I can't blog either, and we aren't allowed to read. Yes, that's right I can't READ a book in front of patrons/students but I can look online...and browse & even BUY stuff and they don't care. Makes sense, right?

I had just bought stampers and decided to test 'em out...maybe I can make my art & stuff like that there. :) Well, probably not but I did make Dracenea a small card stamped because I literally was B-O-R-E-D beyond belief. Minutes were feeling like...hours....hours like...days!

Woweeee, snail mail is super fast here in Michigan these days. I just sent Diane something and I sent Boyd his prize pack from the Goth giveaway and they got 'em the day after I sent them. Pretty fast. Oh and Boyd did a really sweet & cool post ALL about what I sent him. Check it out HERE if you'd like to take a peek. Very nice of him. And I'm always VERY happy when someone else is grateful & happy from the gifts that I give 'em-yay!!!

Well, this will be all for now. Have to get ready and all that stuff 'cause I have an appointment soon. Turning in all that darn Medicaid paperwork. I have to get there a lil' early to talk to the lady who handles that stuff to make sure I did everything right. Just can't wait until it's out of my hands for good!

Mother's Day, Great Score, and Cemetery

Diane @ Good Mourning, Glory! was so kind to make this lovely award pictured above & to give it to me (as well as many other ladies & gentlemen) for Mom's Day. Thanks so much Diane. It's very lovely & purrrty. She gave it to moms and dads of all kinds of 'children'...and I'm the mom of a furry baby named Bibi. She's my lil' white doggie and she's 3 years old. :} She's a very happy, playful, and curious dog. I couldn't imagine living without her-she always makes me smile. ^_^

So how did your Mother's Day go my friends? Mine was nice. First Mike and I (and Bibi too of course) went to his parents' house and gave his mom our gift. I think I did a good job of picking it out this year...a nice silver (not real though) necklace in the shape of a heart and earrings to match. She really liked it so I was glad about that. (Got it for such a good deal that I also got her a couple of nice candles.) We didn't stay too long because he mom had to leave with Mike's sister.

Next we went to my parents' house. We had dinner with my parents, my older sister, her three kids, and my brother. My younger sister was with her daughter at the zoo...I have to say it was a pretty nice day for it. My mom had to drive my brother to his job so we didn't stay too much longer after dinner. I gave my mom her gifts...some Sweet Pea body sprays from Bath & Body Works (mom's request), a candle, and a Kohl's gift card because she said she wanted clothes/pj's and I am not good at picking out that stuff for her anymore. So yeah I went with the gift card (non-personal I know)...but that way she can pick out whatever she wants.

My parents have a nice lilac tree in the backyard so I took some of those home...but darn it, didn't take enough. So I have a pretty wimpy display but they still smell nice. After we got home I decided to run up to the mall because the Asian store was closing & I thought maybe I could get a good deal on some stuff. Well, I got something SO SO awesome (You will really like this Dracenea & Diane, I just know it!)...and for such a great deal! (Will prob post on Goth blog...I'll say this much-it's skeleton/skull related...and hand carved too!)

Then (since I was by myself) I went to a cemetery I've always seen when driving around but never went 'in'...never even knew how to get in it...is an oddly placed cemetery. Well I found out it was a Jewish cemetery...I'm not Jewish but I really like their cemeteries most the times. They didn't have a lot of statues or anything...just really nice headstones and other things I found interesting (like pictures of people who passed on ON the headstone). I'll be posting those (probably in a series because I took about 20 pictures) on my other blog.

So that was pretty much everything. Now, what did YOUs do? Were you good to your mommas!!??!! Did you have a lovely day (if you are a mom)? I hope so. I hope you all will have a great week. This is my last week working for the Winter semester, yeah it's considered Winter because it starts in January. So after this week, I'm not sure of my schedule for a lil' while.

Garden, Roxy, & Art/Handmade stuff as Gifts

Hi peeps. This is a painting(s) I made recently titled "Garden." Not only did ROXY win my Sanrio Prize Pack, I also made her this painting. (And it was a surprise too!) I met her quite a while back on a message board/website and right away I knew she was pretty cool. We chatted about art quite often. Then when I made my blog, she was one of the first people to follow (though she is anonymous)...but she does leave her name when she comments-that helps. :)

Anyhow, she always gave me such nice comments about my art and asked many questions about it...and I LOVED that. She's one of the few peeps I know that seems genuinely interested in my art...{and ART in general-she knows what she's talking about!}. She also has a pretty good idea to what I'm trying to express with my art. (Though a lot of the times, I'm really just painting from my gut-is that possible?-and not thinking too deeply into it. But usually after her comments, I'm like "Hm, she's sorta right about that!")

So it was funny that she won the prize pack because she asked a while back if I would give her a postcard of my art for her b-day. Like I said, I don't get "commissions" (not that I've ever charged anyone for a painting, except at my one & only art show)...so I was very flattered that she asked me this. (What's the saying...flattery will get you everywhere! No, that's not really true here.) I just wanted to make her something for always being so sweet! And to let her know I appreciate her comments & to give her an early b-day gift.

So I got to work on this painting when I saw she was probably gonna be the winner of the prize pack. As I said in the post for the winner, she was only .25 cents off, so I knew it was gonna be her. And I did have a couple ideas for this painting...

I usually work with bigger canvas...16 x 20 atleast. And working with an 8 x 10 piece wasn't working, (EVE paints BIG!)...so I decided to break this piece in 2. Roxy told me some of her fave colors (she didn't know what I was gonna do...but I think she had a lil' bit of an idea)...and so I used them-blue (sky), purple (lilac), and green...

I also asked her "Butterfly or Flower?" She chose Butterfly. But I decided to use ALL my glue-on sparkly pieces instead cuz it seemed to "work" with the whole piece coming together...

So it ended up being like this. If you put it side by side, it matches up...and you can turn it inwards also (as I've tried to show above). However you'd like to display it really.

And there's things done on purpose. (Which progressed as I kept thinking what is the concpet here?) Like the flower being in three pieces (which I cut up)...butterfly two pieces...and dragonfly one. And the flower being in the green, dragonfly being in the blue, and hm...it's up to YOU to wonder why the butterfly is placed in purple in the middle-in half. Hmm....

Roxy said she really liked it and I'm SO glad. She even sent me a pic of her holding it, that made me smile! (And I never even seen a pic of her before today either!...and we've been chatting for quite a while!)...but she didn't want me to use it, & that's o.k. I understand cuz I am so unphotogenic in stuff (unless I take it or can change it). Just don't like cameras/video cameras/etc...!!! Booo...;}

Also...

...Roxy told me a lil' while back (when I posted this pic above when it was in-the-making) that I should just finish it up and give it to my therapist-whom it was being made for (and Roxy GOT what I was tring to say w/it too). I was weary on it at 1st 'cause I didn't think I could do anything else to make it better imo. But I took her advice and finished it the same couple of days I did hers. {Please click HERE to see the in-the-making piece that left me stumped on where to go next.}

The dragonfly helped a lot-1st off, it now covers up the glue spot that looked awful before. That dragonfly was the missing link to this piece...so I think it came out alright. I don't have a name for it yet but I don't think it needs one really. I'll see how I'll feel before I see her again. And that'll be next week. Hope she likes it!

My therapist is SO great, I couldn't ask for a more helpful & cooler one. And she has lots of art done by patients all over her walls...and she knows I like to paint. So she will be getting something from me to add to her wall, finally. (Oh & this is a smaller piece but it worked this time around.) Only took me a year to get on this...mainly because of what I will say below...

Only until recently did I start making art for people. I thought giving my art as a gift was weird for one MAIN reason...and that is-will this person like it? They can tell me everything they would like incorporated into a piece...and I can know their 'style' of stuff they like but in the end, it's still taking a BIG chance. Yet I know that whomever the person is (friend or family) that they would appreciate anything I'd make 'em.

I also appreciate any kind of art/handmade gift a friend/family member would give me because it's always the thought that counts, right!?! And usually those are the cooler gifts to get anyways. This has been true with my very talented & thoughtful friends Jennylee and Juno.

Darn, it's late...I gotta be ready to rock for the Kills concert tomorrow night...I mean TONIGHT. So I must get my beauty sleep, ha ha. Take care everyone & happy start-of-the-weekend. So glad it's here, it's been such a long week for me.

Sushi and Jenny's Gift

My good friend Jennylee and I went out for sushi the other night. Believe it or not, that was my first time trying it. It was pretty good. Jenny suggested the Philedelphia Roll so I got that. It was pretty good. She got something called Godzilla (sushi)...that was pretty big...well it was called Godzilla. :) She let me have a piece and it was good but the sauce was very hot so I wiped that off. I don't like spicy stuff.

We mainly went out because she was finally done with my birthday gift. As some of you know, art can be complicated to make sometimes. (Oh, this was our first art trade too. I gave her a piece of my art for her b-day & she was giving me something that she made). So she was having some issues with the piece over the past several weeks...
but finally, I got my gift Wednesday night.

And she was right-I LOVE it!...
and Yes, it's so ME, Jenny!...

Here it is...DREAM. It's on cardboard but it looks like it's black paint on wood (that's a secret of hers). The rest is plaster (& paint?...correct me if I'm wrong Jenny) and a cool picture of...ALICE. It's gothic/dark Alice though, but that's cool...I love many styles of Alice, as many of you know. And GOTHIC/DARK Alice is one of my faves!

Here's a detail shot of the picture. Alice is in a pool of blood...she's surrounded by Wonderland things including the Mad Hatter's hat and a teapot pouring tea into a cup on a unbirthday present. I really like this picture she chose.

This is a detail shot of the left side where the word DREAM is at...at the very top. Jenny said there are little people & other kinds of images hidden in the plaster. I'm not too good at finding the lil' details so she might have to point a few out to me again.

As we were leaving the restaurant, we picked up some necklaces at the door. Well, they were free! But since it was so dark in there, I couldn't see what color(s) I was getting. I wanted blue...and I got it but it's only half of one necklace. For some reason different colors are strung together with some of the necklaces, but that's kinda cool actually.

All in all, I enjoyed eating sushi for the first time, spending some time with Jenny, and getting my VERY cool gift, which I love. She also got me a nice Joker shirt with his quote being "Why so serious?" That was a nice surprise. Now I have 4 Joker shirts...and that's my 1st with that great line. She also got me some Peeps...they are bright pink!

Silly Bubblegum

My friend got me a couple small packs of silly bubblegum. The one on the right is Potty Mouth Gum. And the one on the left with the barking dog is PMS Gum, ha ha. It says "It's not PMS, It's You." I like this one more than Potty Mouth...

...mainly because of the saying on the side. "On second thought, it's still you." Thanks Juno!

A Lil' Bit of This & That...all from TARGET

I got some after-my-birthday-gifts & hey, I'll take 'em at anytime! ;} My friend got me this really sweet Hello Kitty clipboard. (She got it from Target but my Target don't sell this new HK merch yet, so I was very happy to get it!)

She also got me this cute BIG magnet. It's on my fridge. Thanks so much Vicky!!!

My older sister got me this awesome Hello Kitty wall clock for my birthday also. Ain't it cute? Yeah, I know where she got it from...t-a-r-g-e-t. :)

I found this cool folder when I went to Target to get some stuff the other day. It's made of this plastic (?) material...so it will last forever, seriously. I've had ones like these before & they rule.

Sorry that this isn't the best shot. But I found this in the clearance section of T-A-R-G-E-T, maybe they should spell it like that. Anyways it's a nice black shirt...it's see-through but that's o.k. cuz I plan to wear it over some of my tank tops this summer.

Finished This Today

This is going to be a gift to a friend for her birthday next week. I worked on it last week and it needed something else...hm, what could it be, I wondered. So when all else fails, I get out the ol' glue gun! And what was laying around in my art space?...pieces from a mirror (left over from another project). Think they helped.

Here's a detail pic of the top of the painting. Her fave color is green so I wanted to include that color for sure.

Sorry if this is a bit hard to see but it actually looked worse with my flash on. I also added a pendant. I put in the top left corner. It's covered in glue (cuz it wouldn't stay on very good at first) & green metallic paint. I hope it'll stay on properly-it should with all the glue I smothered all over it! I hope she'll like it...the whole painting that is. ;}
